What is a Banner Ad?
A banner ad is one which appears on web pages you access and features advertisers who have paid to place their ad
on the website. They generally appear as a strip across the top or bottom of the page, about an inch in depth.
Sometimes the advertising is for the website you accessed, (for instance a banner promoting Yahoo Personals may
appear at the top of Yahoo mail) but the space is also sold to other advertisers on a rotating basis. While you may not
be able to afford a banner on Yahoo or other major websites, there are companies which have formed networks of smaller websites that will place your banner advertisement at a very reasonable cost.
How Do I Buy Banner Ads?
These spaces are sold according to the number of times they are displayed, called “impressions” and some sellers
will target your ad toward a chosen audience. Many companies perform this service and the prices vary. You can find
them and compare prices by doing a search for “banner advertising.”
Often these companies provide many other internet services, so make sure you are looking at banner advertising.
“Guaranteed traffic” generators do not use banners, but full web pages instead, and often require that you have your
own website to promote. If you do own a site, banner exchanges are also available which place your banner in
exchange for a placement of their banner on your site. You can search for these using the search term “banner
exchanges”.
Do Banner Ads Work?
Banner ads were the hottest commodity around for some time on the internet, but their popularity and their
effectiveness have decreased tremendously over the years, mostly because they just don’t get clicked on often. The
trade-off for this is that you can buy thousands of impressions at a very low price.
What Do I Use For My Banner Ad?
Ah! That’s the easy part! The Berry Tree has made several banner ads in various sizes to work in your campaign. These
ads are available in your AutomaticBuilder "Back Office". All you have to do is choose the banner you want to use, and
follow the directions in the tutorial below:
When you find a supplier for your banner impressions, you will need to know what size they accept. There are banners
to match every size in your AutomaticBuilder Back Office. Also, you will be instructed as to whether they accept
"animated" banners. If they do not, you cannot use these in your campaign.
After you have matched a banner to the size requirements, your supplier will ask you for two pieces of information: The
"Link URL" and the "Image URL". The link URL is the full address of your Berry Tree website or (if you have one) your
capture page. The image URL is the location on the web of the graphic for your banner. You do NOT put your ID in this
address. If you are using a supplier for your banner ads, this is all of the information you will need. You do not need the
HTML code on the third line.
If you want to place the banners on a website of your own, you will need the HTML code that is supplied for that banner.
You will need to insert your Berry Tree ID in the text where it is shown above. Copy the edited code that you create using
your ID and paste it in the place on your page where you want your banner to appear.
If you want to download the banner graphic and use it various places, right click on the image and select "save target
as" and give it a name. Then you will be able to insert the graphic wherever you want to use it. Remember, however,
you must "link" the graphic to your Berry Tree site or it will not work.
AutomaticBuilder has a large selection of Berry Tree banners to use in your Advertising Campaigns.
